Over the past year we have been wanting something a bit more sturdy for our camping trips. We began looking at all shapes and sizes of small travel trailers, A-frames, hybrids, hard sides, T@bs, rPods—we’ve looked at them all. We finally stopped at Windish and found the camper of our dreams: a 19′ Flying Cloud by Airstream. This little camper has everything we ever wanted in a home-away-from-home. We are grateful for the years we had the pop-up, and all the lessons that we learned with our first camper.
Now, the Airstream adventures begin!
Our first first trip in the airstream was to a lakeside campsite at Steamboat Lake State Park. Cheyenne was taken with the AS more than any of us. If we were not out exploring, he was either napping just inside the door or on the bed.
Our camping spot was magnificent! Ospreys had a nest across the lake from us and flew around the cove all day long looking for fish, or foraging for food in a meadow alongside two sandhill cranes. Bald eagles swooped down in front of us grabbing fish and flying off to nearby trees.
We came across a sheep herder driving hundreds of sheep through the area. It was bizarre!
The landscape is full of horse and cattle ranches with beautiful fields of green grass surrounded by looming mountains. Aspen trees are abundant in Steamboat, too. I imagine the turning of aspens is magical in this beautiful spot.
The campground is large, and was full over the weekend. But, the loop that we stayed in was very quiet consisting mostly of retired couples that enjoyed playing Enya in the evenings. It was quite amusing 🙂
You are able to rent kayaks, paddle boards, and different kinds of boats from the Steamboat Lake Marina. There are also hiking trails all around the lake, beginning right from the campsite. We stuck close to the campground this trip, only exploring a few of the other nearby parks (Pearl Lake and Hahns Peak Lake) and 4-wheel drive roads. We were so overwhelmed with all the beauty around us, we were sure that we would be back again, exploring further and further each new visit.
The campsite also has hot showers, a small store, a dump station, and place to fill up your water tanks.
